Ric,
Good to meet you this weekend at the show . . . . . . sorry I missed you on Sunday as I wanted to chat a bit about the fakes you had, get some photos and my daughter mentioned that a friend of hers from school wanted your autograph as his father was a fan from your wrestling days.
Keep in touch . . . . hope to run into you again

Howdy…First off, thanks for your work exposing/warning about fakes!
I’m VERY accustomed to folks innocently (or not) trying to sell fake US bridle bit “bosses” or medallions as legit. I’m CONSTANTLY writing gentle emails to ebay sellers letting them know the clear differences. Most often I never hear anything back and the auctions go un-changed. Just yesterday, however, I emailed a guy and not only did he send me a nice thank you email, he actually PULLED THE AUCTION! May his numbers (and sales) increase!!!!

Mr Savage,
I hope this finds you well . My Wife found your web site to me after I had some problems with a few things I purchased. I found it quiet interesting. Well the items I purchased are as follows. CS two piece that was supposed to have belonged to Mosby, Pocket watch that was inscribed to Mosby, and a prewar canteen that was captured at cold harbor. Well of course they turned out to bad. The person I bought them from name is P**** E****. His name on eBay is
H******. I understand he was kicked off eBay. Do you know of him ? I believe him to be originally from ****. Also is there a web site that deals with the WW1 period ? Any input you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Look forward to hearing from you.
Best Wishes
Ken

Dear Mr. Savage, You don't know me, although I regularly read your column in American Digger. I am associated with the Lela Latch Lloyd Museum in Cisco, Texas. You may have read the writeup about the museum in the November issue of Western & Eastern Treasures. As a result of that writeup, I received a call from a man, and a followup set of photos of a supposed Texas CW buckle with a bullet impacted in it. This is being offered to our museum, BUT the photos certainly do not look as if this were original. Would you be interested in seeing these and giving me your opinion. While the lead backing looks original, I am not sure if Texas buckles used lead backing. The bullet does not look damaged enough to have been fired into the buckle. Also, the back of the bullet looks flattened as if it were driven into the buckle with a hammer. Finally, the patina is extremely nice for a buckle of this age. Sincerely, Jerry ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ |
Mr. Savage did not know how to address this but I was looking around at Relics and found this web site the Alabama Map/Tree buckle at $400 dollars has to be fake along with the Breast plat. I was wondering what you think.
Thank you so much for keep our hobby straight.
William

Hello
I came upon your site and would like to know if it's still current. I've been metal detecting for over 30 years and during my last trip was fortunate enough to have access to a verified Confederate campsite. I've verified, without doubt, some of the items but have a few that remain a mystery. Would anyone associated with your site be of assistance in helping me identify the items if I sent a pic.
Thank you in advance
Susan

Hi Ric. I'm a relic hunter living in Falling Waters, WV. A few years ago, I found a block I button with a rusted iron back in an area that was used for the 140th anniversary of Antietam re-enactment. The site was also along the Confederate trench line that went from Hagerstown, MD to Downsville, MD in the days after Gettysburg and we have found good relics there - Gardner bullets, mostly.
Thanks for your time and I appreciate what you're doing in helping folks educate themselves.

Hello I'm trying to date this U.S. Navy hat insignia, so far I'm told sometime in the 1800's. Can you tell me if it is 1800's and if it's an officer insignia? I would appreciate any help to can provide. Steve ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I want to point your attention to a auction currently running on proxi bid. Please see the link below. As a very new collector and relic hunter I am practically lost. I have only been relic hunting for about 7 months and will be attending my first organized hunt at the end of March, DIV 17. I occasionally search for civil war related items on auction sites and found this today. I thought to myself wow thats a good price and googled "slave tag" before I bid. I found your site and from what I can tell this is fake. Am I right? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Here is one for your site, this was sold as a circa 1800 infantry canteen flask, at first look it looks old but upon inspection it is a fake. See Photos after I opened it to see inside, it was clearly new, stained to look old and even had the worn look placed on it and had a new wood smell, wood that old don't smell. This was sold by an eBay seller from Great Britain who goes by (trafalgar1805antiques) and he is selling a lot of items. You have a great website that I found very helpful in trying to identify a navy sword belt buckle that I own (attached image). It appears to be similar to some 1850 era naval plates that I have seen advertised, but it is somewhat different in the design of the wreath. I am certain it is genuine because of where and the circumstances of when I bought it. It apparently was in service for a long time because the front had been repeatedly polished so that some feather detail has been lost from the eagle, and there is no gilt remaining. It has the numbers "26" stamped on the front under parts.
I was wondering if you could identify it or give me a sense of its value or scarcity?
Thanks for any response that you can provide.
Joe

Hi,
I am a returning collector/relic hunter (12 years off when our kids were
born). I am finally in a position to start a small collection, and go on a
yearly relic hunting trip.
Before purchasing anything, I was looking around the internet, and found
your site. Lots of great information there.
I am curious if you have any evidence of fake civil war bullets? I ask
because I am interested in purchasing examples to add to my collection, but
am leery. I did not see any specific mention of fake bullets on your site,
or on the Civil War Bullet Collector's site.
Just wondering if you might have any information you can share, or links to
sites which might deal with that?
Thanks for your time,
Robert

Faker's Lingo-Loved it-The only more popular one is "Listing in the reproduction catagory to keep it from being removed as a cave or grave good" and don't forget it is listed there because I did not find it and I don't have authenticity papers to prove it is real so I HAVE TO LIST IT IN REPRODUCTIONS. They are scums! Thanks for trying to help others, I have tried but always end up the bad girl. Susan

Hello Ric,
How are you doing. I was wondering if you could help me determine whether or not this is a fake buckle. A new person came on the forum
posting all this new stuff saying he found it all in a 20 ft area. But to me the plate looks like it has shoepolish on it...Also, I noticied on your website that you were saying something about the hooks on these. Is the hook on this one authentic??
Thanks for your help
Joshua

Thanks Ric. Your site ROCKS. I have learned A LOT about Civil War fakes
from it and it will be invaluable to me in the future.
Appreciate your time and love for relics and your AWESOME humor in picking
out those scumbag's fake pieces. Some of your comments REALLY had me
ROLLING Laughing my Butt off!

Hey Rick, Just got finished reading your web-site on fakes. Just wanted to say I enjoyed it very much. It is good to know that their are people out their that take into consideration us folks who are Civil War buffs who enjoy buying artifacts but may not be very well educated as to what individual pieces may or may not have, (ie, stamping, aging, manufacture, etc.) I do not for the most part buy from e-bay, but what I do purchase that is Civil War related usually is expensive and I work two jobs for my hard earned money. Just reading your article makes me stick to the thought that I will deal with people I either know or are recommended by people I know. Thanks, Darren

Hi Ric
Your site is looking very nice!
I liked your article in the American Digger magazine this month.
Did you catch the killer spear point that Terry Waxham picked up in the Mississippi bayou?
If not take a look at it: http://www.cwpforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=752
Nice to see your fake plates section; if you want to stick this one in there it might help someone.
Although not a blatant fake it could be passed to someone who is less knowledgeable about such thievery.
It is a reproduction C.S.A. rectangle belt plate made from an original Atlanta Arsenal mold by the Bannerman Company.
Sand cast measuring 46mm wide by 66mm long, figure 43 in Crouch’s book.
Bannerman plates are O K if sold as such and are collected for what they are.
This one however has a righteous patina to it and if you didn’t recognize the sharp curved hooks it’s a good fake.
I suppose it could have been lost and later recovered at a UCV reunion site but I seriously doubt it.
Thus I think it was buried to age it for a while?
Best regards,
Danny

Not into buying 'militaria', but I was reading your article on fakes and finding out frauds, and did a doubletake when I saw you suggest they write "Carolina Panthers rule!", I'm a HUGE Civil War and Revo. War nerd, and an even bigger Panthers fan, nice to find another out there!

No question, a statement. I saw this was you offering this and jumped to get my bid in. I think you are one of the most reputable dealers around and an eloquent spokesman for the hobby.

Ric,
Thanks a lot for your guides! Sweet, short, and interesting enough to wake up further interest on the subject. Besides your humorous comments made me wish you'd combine all guides into a book. Everyone would love it! Unless you have already done that!

Thanks for posting the guides to Civil War fakes.

Hi, Thank You for this valuable information. I am kind of new to collecting Civil War Buttons. I purchased this off of ebay a couple of years ago and was under the impression that this was authentic. I am a little too embarrassed to tell you what I payed for it. I know your reputation as a knowledgeable Civil War Buff and that you sell quite a bit of civil war artifacts. If you could tell me how I end this auction before someone places a bid on it I would appreciate it.
I have looked all over the ebay home page and I dont see anywhere how to end an auction early.
Thanks Again and respond back if you could.
Tom

Hello Ric: Just visited your interesting SAVAGE-STATION.COM web site, and enjoyed reading your collecting guides, especially about flags which are my favorite subject. I also noted that you locate items others are "looking for", and as such I wanted to let you know that I am seeking for my collection some dug relic spear point tops as shown in the attached photo. Do let me know if ever you see anything available like these examples. Sincerely, Ben K www.TheColours.info ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hi. I just read your brief guide on spotting fake swords n knives. Very helpful, thank you! ______________________________________________________________________________________________ |
Sir, I applaud your efforts to expose these scam artists. So many folks get burned in the ways you describe, and E-Bay is only fascilitating their thievery--AGAINST THEIR VERY OWN POLICIES< AND ALL LAWS PERTAINING TO THESE "RELICS". I BELIEVE THEY SHOULD BE SUED IN FEDERAL COURT, IT'S SO BAD.--Anyway, you've gone far and beyond the call of duty in your efforts, and I cannot possibly say enough to do you justice! I do a similar thing with indian relics, which are a farrr worse problem. Yet, YOU DA MAN! Keep up the OUTSTANDING, HONEST, AND OH-SO-HELPFUL WORK! I'll put you into my favorite sellers list and pass the word. Regards, Mike

Hello. My name is Collena G. I liked much, your information page. We are a group of senior citizens trying to stretch our social security. My daughter bid on ebay at times.Thats why we have '01 as a beginning date. Actually we've been on line since last Sept. I have five Civil War Pictures on line. As I explain in my description I did rescue an old moldy book. I show it in my pictures. I would never knowingly cheat anyone. but it would mean alot to me if you could look at the photo's on my site.As an older person people try to rip us off all the time. It gets discouraging. I would never want to do that to someone else. I sell under my own name, I can remember that!! I often wondered if people had 2 ebay accounts or had friends bid up an item. Sometimes when I bid and the price goes up $5. over what I bid. I might bid once more. if it goes up again. I stop bidding. Naturally I lose. BUT just in the nick of time I get a second chance offer.

Thank you for your faking information. Do you know the significance of a small oval stamp in a McElroy cavalry sword hilt with E.I. and three stars above it inside the oval????

Hello,
