The Confederate Bowie Knife Guide, by Lee Hadaway

This type of knife is dangerous because the knife itself is probably Civil War period.  Where the fakery begins is where the goober that owned it used a modern die stamp to stamp CSA and 1861 on the wood grip.  The stampings are fresh, and Confederates didn't stamp the grips of their knives.  It is a shame that enterprising conmen deface history this way, but some folks do ANYTHING for money.  This seller had a bogus letter of authentication saying it was worth $14,000!!!!  PUH-LEASE!!!!!

Yet another version of the fake blade stamp.

This 100% fake Ames sword has the 100% junk stamps and overdone patina.

This is a fake AMES saber.  The grip, pommel cap, and letter stamps are all wrong.

This is a 100% fake, junk Confederate bowie knife.  Note the usual cruddy stamping, and the moron-inscribed grip.

This is a fake Confederate "McElroy" bowie knife.  The pictures are cruddy, but you can see that the stamping is crap.

This is a fake Sheffield knife.  These British-made blades are very common to see reproduced.  Note the modern letter stamps.

Another fake with a tell-tale gasoline dipped blade and a typical fake stamp.

Just in case you were blind or curious, THIS IS AS FAKE AS YOU CAN POSSIBLY GET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This fake Confederate knife is not badly made, but it is still as fake as a six-dollar bill.

Fake knife with a fake stamp.  The knife is made by Atlanta Cutlery.

Not a horrible fake, but a fake it is.  Bad stamping.

This is a pretty obvious repro.  When you see a sword like this that would ordinarily cost $25,000+ on e-bay starting at $150.00 and no reserve...RUN!!!!!!!!

Another high-end sword if real, but ALAS!  another repro.  Note how the star above the CS goes into the edge of the guard.  This is an easy tip to spot these .

Whoever made this fake was doing good as he aged the grip and the brass...but why he put that god-awful stamping on it I'll never know.

If you have any sword in your collection with a junk stamping like this...just hang yourself!  Note the acid-aged rustline at the ricasso.

The seller of this rusty suppository is famous for selling fake, dug Confederate knives on e-bay.  He now sticks them in the REENACTMANT/REPRO category, but his descriptions claim that they are real.  Uhhh...They aren't.  JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This excellent reproduction comes from the legendary "HOUSE of SWORDS."  It was sold as real on e-bay and some poor collector just got hosed.

WoW!  Some poor soul got their skids greased for over $7,000 on this 100% fake Sheffield knife!  Well...the seller DID use the trademark PRIVATE AUCTION, so we may never know if a victim bought it, or if it was just a shill.

I never know whether to laugh or cry when I see this type of junk.  Fake stamps, horrible etchings...this would look bad at a costume party.

Nothing like a puke-green backdrop to highlight a piece of junk fake sword.  This one hails from either Mexico or Pakistan.  Neither is Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The seller, after being kicked off e-bay a few times, has listed all his fake junk in the REENACTMENT/REPRO category.  Here is a fake knife.

I have several examples of this type of fake Confederate artillery sword on this page because they are a very commonly sold fake.  Note the "teat" on the pommel cap.  This NEVER existed on an original.   Plus the patina is applied, and the stamping is crap.

Yet ANOTHER fake knife with an equally fake inscription on the grip.  The inscription SHOULD read, "SELLER IS A CROOK!"

You know, the swine that make these fake knives should be forced to have their colons cleansed with them.

Another modern reproduction knife with a fantasy CS ARSENAL stamp.

Many things this might be, but Confederate isn't one of them.  Fantasy item.  Horrible fake Sheffield stamping.

It is truely amazing that so many of these crooks take all the time and effort to rapid-age their junk, they apply patinas and rust blades...then they use the cheapest, most obvious craftstore letter stamps to do their makers marks.  Look at this POS.  What an idiot!

Hey!  How about a blurry photo AND some props in the photo!  That'll get 'em!  Fake Confederate sword.  Note the scimitar-like curved blade.

Here is a textbook example of a fake as hell Confederate knife!  Look at the modern letter stamps in the grip, the lack of any type of wear on the letters, all of it.  They even put a star on it for heavan's sake!

Here is another example of a crook doing a passable job of aging the blade, then using cheap-ass stamps to do the maker's mark.  He can't even keep them in a straight line!  What a dickweed.  This is a typical style Pakistani knife.

Here is the most common type of Pakistani bowie knife.  Confederate knives NEVER had the bolo type blades.  As you can see, the butt-cracker that made this junker did his drunk monkey imitation when applying the fake makers's stamp!

Great example of a 1960's reproduction that is now re-gripped and being sold as real.  Better fake maker's stamp than the usual, but still a fake.  The original grips on this were wood.

A fake Sheffield (English) knife.  Modern letter stamp.

This looks like it came out of a Pirates of the Carribbean gift pack!  This junker was being sold as a Confederate Naval bowie knife.  HA!

This aged up Atlanta Cutlery reproduction was sold on e-bay by a homefilledwcrap!

And I thought Pakistan was just a place that harbors terrorists!  Look at the BEAUTIFUL fake Confederate knives they produce!

No matter what homefilledwcrap tells us, this fake is NOT a Confederate naval cutlass!

Here is a fake Ames knife.  That stamping is about as bad as it gets.  It is the same moron-applied lettering you will see over and over on fake Confederate knives.

This is a 100% fake Confederate D-Guard bowie knife.  Look at the crappy stamp done with modern letter dies, and applied one letter at a time.  Look at the rust along the line beneath the stamping.  This indicates it was acid or gasoline dipped for rapid aging.

This winner is the famed fake "coffin gripped" knife.  Atlanta Cutlery and Crazy Crow sell these as reproductions and then the scum buy them and age them up.

This is a very popular fake Confederate artillery sword.  Note the teat on the pommel, the rapid, gasoline aged blade, etc... These are sold often, so be careful!

Just to cover all  bases, this is a fake AMES stamp.  Ames made US swords, and is a popular maker.

Like in the fake Confederate stamps, look at the modern letter style, and the uneven stamping.  It

looks like a drunk monkey applied the letters.  The smaller image shows a real AMES stamp.  BIIIIG

Difference!!

Here is another fake AMES stamp.  INDIA is on the obverse ricasso.

This IS NOT a Civil War period sword.  This is a $25.00 India import sold in any giftshop in Gettysburg.

This is not a Civil War period knife.  This is a modern reproduction with a rapid age job on the blade.

Here is a fantasy "C.S. Arsenal" D-guard bowie.  See the rapid aging on the blade, and the modern letter stamps.

This was sold as a Civil War ORIGINAL PERIOD ITEM!  The claim was that it was a "very rare" knife.  It isn't.  It looks like a kitchen or utility knife from the mid 20th century.

Here is a vintage piece of excrement that is another shining example of the fake Confederate knife.  Note the CSA etched on the blade.  You will also see other etchings such as DIE YANKEE, and YANKEE SLAYER.  You can see the standard rapid-age job on the blade, and the moron-made stamping on the metal with modern letter stamps.

Now THIS is about as bad a P.O.S. as you can find in the fake sword category!   Look at the horrible stamping, and the pathetic attempt at aging the guard and blade.  See the fresh rust in the scabbard throat?  If you bought this as real, you should be forced to swallow it.

Here is a 100% fake RICHMOND ARSENAL stamp on a 100% fake Confederate sword.  See the evidence of gasoline dipping on the metal?

Here is a 100% fake stamping on the Pommel of a fake Confederate bowie knife.  Note the drunk-monkey applied letters?  See the overdone hammer marks?  See the fresh rust, especially in the letters?  It is possible that the blade was made from a cut down sword, but this was not a Confederate knife in any way, shape, or form.

A fake Texas bowie knife with the usual crappy stamping and the usual acid dipping.

Fantasy Confederate Navy dagger.  The only thing real in this photo is the foam backing the knife is pictured on.

This is a fake blacksmith-made D-Guard.  This blade looks more like a Turkish model than anything a Confederate would have carried.

GEE!  It looks like the SAME knife as the one above!  Same background too!  Only NOW the seller is calling it a DUG knife after the grip was removed.  What a slime!

This is just ugly.  Fake sword, with one of the worst fake stamps I have ever seen.  Acid dipping for age.  UGLY!!!

The top picture is the fake Confederate short sword, and this is where it originates.  A rapid-aged repro.

Great fantasy Confederate knife.  I wonder is that 114 on the blade was put there by the Pakistani guy that made it, or the schlameel that is selling it as real!

Here is another bogus Confederate sword.

Here we have the orgin of another fake knife.  See the applied age job?

Another Atlanta Cutlery reproduction being sold as a period item.  Oiy Vey!

Homemade FAKE Confederate D-guard bowie knife.

This is a FAKE Confederate D-guard, similar in construction to the one above.

Total rapid-aged fake offered by one of e-bay's greatest fakers.

Here is another Atlanta Cutlery reproduction that some enterprising slimebag has rapid-aged.

One of THE MOST dangerous fakes is the real sword with a fake stamp added.  This is a nice US artillery saber that some enterprising crook has added a fake McElroy Confederate stamping.  LEARN YOUR STAMPS and buy the reference books listed at the top of this page!!!!!  Never think you can't be fooled.

It was the best of fakes, it was the worst of fakes.

The seller of this Atlanta Cutlery reproduction has stamped CS ARSENAL on the riccasso, and aged the blade.

Here is a chunk-of-junk fake dug knife.  The seller is even too lazy to crop the photo.

This is a laughable junker.  It is a typical Pakistani bowie that wholesale's for about $8.00, and is retailed at gift shops for about $25.00.  Some goober has stamped in "TERRY'S TEXANS" on the blade with modern die stamps.  The blade has been aged as well.

Here is a fake CSA knife.  The blade is rapid-rusted, and the CSA and 1861 marks are bogus.  Patina doesn't match the rest of brass.

You take a CRAZY CROW reproduction, age the blade...do a horrible job with a fake stamp...and WALLA!  A piece of junk!

The lamp pull-chain is an added bonus if you buy this purported Civil War knife!  Lord!  Not even close!

*sigh!* Here is another classic piece of junk.  Note the teat on the pommel.  That is the first obvious sign this is a fake.  Then note the fresh rust and that terrible stamp on the blade.  That is the next clue.  These are fairly common fakes, so be aware.  Besides, Nashville Plowworks never made artillery swords like this.

Mo junk, mo junk, mo junk!  Here is a fake stamp done with modern letter die on a reproduction knife.  I wonder why he spelled "ARMORY" with a "U"?

Another fugly Pakistani bowie knife.

Here is another Atlanta Cutlery repro knife that has had the blade gasoline dipped.

This is a very common fake Confederate sword made in Mexico.

This is a fake Texas bowie and sheath.  Modern stitching and rivets on scabbard, and incorrect blade style.
